Each monkey represents a moral proverb:
• Mizaru — covers his eyes, “see no evil.”
• Kikazaru — covers his ears, “hear no evil.”
• Iwazaru — covers his mouth, “speak no evil.”
The concept comes from Japanese philosophy (originating from the 17th-century carving at the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, Japan) and is often interpreted as a reminder to avoid evil thoughts, words, and actions.
