cinema classics the cardinal dvd nieuw in seal Het episodische levensverhaal van de Iers-Amerikaanse priester Stephen Fermoyle. Vanaf zijn inwijding in 1917 tot aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog krijgt Fermoyle te maken met verschillende tegenslagen. De keiharde werkelijkheid van het leven doet hem regelmatig aan zijn geloof twijfelen. Maar het is niet alleen ellende wat op zijn pad komt. Een ontmoeting met de mooie Annemarie is misschien wel de grootste beproeving. Is de liefde het waard om zijn roeping en carrière aan de kant te schuiven? Otto Preminger baseerde de film op het gelijknamige boek van Henry Morton Robinson. Het is eenvoudig te zien waarom het verhaal de regisseur, die altijd op zoek was naar controverse en taboes, zo aansprak. Toch is Premingers behandeling van enkele discussiepunten in het katholieke geloof, en de (passieve) houding van de kerk tegenover racisme en het opkomende fascisme, voor zijn doen nog redelijk conventioneel. Op de set maakte Preminger zijn reputatie als tiran wel meer dan waar. Hoofdrolspeler Tom Tryon klaagde nog jaren over de onmenselijke behandeling door de regisseur. Tryon zelf stopte enkele jaren later met acteren en werd een succesvolle romanschrijver. The Cardinal werd genomineerd voor 6 Oscars, waaronder die voor Beste Regisseur en Beste Montage. De meest opvallende nominatie was echter voor John Huston. De bekende filmmaker kreeg na 13 Oscarnominaties als regisseur en scenarioschrijver, nu ook een nominatie als acteur, voor zijn rol als Kardinaal Glennon. Ook bij de Golden Globes werd de film 6 keer genomineerd, waarbij de prijzen voor Beste Film en Beste Mannelijke Bijrol (Huston) werden gewonnen. Voor regisseur Preminger en hoofdrolspelers Tryon en Schneider bleef het bij een nominatie.
